Alcoholic dies at Ludhiana's private hospital, doctor held for negligence

Ludhiana, April 14

Following the death of a 34-year-old patient, who had been taking treatment for de-addiction of liquor at a private hospital near Saggu Chowk here, a doctor has been arrested for alleged negligence.

The family of the patient staged a protest on Thursday morning against Manas Hospital, where the patient was admitted.

The deceased has been identified as Sahil of New Model Town. The family of the deceased alleged that Sahil died due to negligence of the hospital staff. They suspected that he was allegedly given wrong medication.

Mohan Gupta, a relative of the deceased, said Sahil wanted to give up his liquor consumption habit and that’s why he was admitted to the hospital.

He said Sahil was admitted to the hospital on April 9 and his condition was fine till April 13 afternoon. “Sahil was given some medicine around 3.30

pm on Wednesday, after which his condition started deteriorating and he died,” he alleged.

“When Sahil’s condition started deteriorating, his mother was present in the room but she was asked to leave the room and go downstairs. His mother was, however, told by the hospital staff that Sahil was fine. Around 6 pm on Wednesday, when Sahil’s wife (my sister) reached the hospital, she was not allowed to visit the room where he was undergoing treatment. She later managed to reach the room and found that Sahil’s body had turned blue. He was not breathing,” he alleged.

Gupta said, “Manas Hospital staff then asked us

to take the patient to Hero Heart DMC Hospital where he was declared brought dead.”

A FIR under Section 304-A (causing death due to negligence) has been registered at the PAU police station against Dr Ravi and the staff concerned of Manas Hospital.

Meanwhile, Dr Sunil Katyal, secretary, IMA, Punjab, said as per the Supreme Court ruling, no FIR can be lodged against any doctor without inquiry and verifying the facts. “We will meet the Ludhiana Police Commissioner tomorrow in this regard,” he said.
