Having failed to persuade officials at the local government offices to pay their long-pending bill, functionaries at the local office of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) have urged senior office-bearers of the district administration to the intervene and impress upon the defaulting offices to pay their dues.

The departments of Local Bodies, Health and Police are in the list of consumers who owe PSPCL around Rs 1.35 crore.

Incharges of these offices have now been warned of punitive action to be launched by the PSPCL soon.

Senior Executive Officer Amandeep Singh Khangura said regular reminders to various offices had failed to fetch desired results over the past few years.

“While we have been regularly adjusting our dues on account of the power bills, functionaries at the municipal council did not reciprocate by paying bills for streetlight and other categories,” said Khangura. A case for one-time-settlement in connection with a long-pending bill of the civil hospital has also been sent to higher officials in the PSPCL, stated Khangura.

Malerkotla Assistant Commissioner Gurmit Bansal said designated personnel in various government departments were cautioned against ignoring the PSPCL guidelines on payment of dues and availing facilities under various categories. He said the pending amounts of the bills due can be deposited according to the OTS (one-time-settlement) scheme launched by the PSPCL and the settled amount after the waiver of interest or penalty can also be paid in installments.

Bansal added that the administration had also decided to ensure that all government departments implement the revamped distribution sector scheme and get meters installed without further delay. “As we intend to achieve a hundred per cent target of installing prepaid smart meters, you all are advised to inform this office after clearing pending bills and installing smart meters so that the district monitoring committee can be updated about the status report,” said Bansal.

Taking cognisance of reports about consuming electricity through power connections in the name of some other entity, Bansal cautioned that action would be taken against those personnel who fail to get meters installed in the original name of the office concerned.
