The Punjab State Commission for NRIs has drawn attention of the ADGP, NRI and Women Wing, to the plight of Punjabi youths who have been stuck in Dubai after being duped by travel agents.

Disposing of a complaint filed by a rights activist, Kulwant Singh Nagra, seeking suo motu cognisance of a news item published in The Tribune, the Chairman of the Commission, Justice Shekher Dhawan, has forwarded a copy of the orders passed by the panel to the ADGP, NRI & Women Wing, to take necessary action in the matter of Punjabi youths who got stuck in Dubai during the Covid pandemic when their employers stopped paying them their dues.

“A news report titled “Duped by travel agents, youth stuck in Dubai” and published in The Tribune on June 15, 2020, has been sent by KS Nagra, a rights activist from Jalandhar. The same was received by the commission on June 23, 2020, and suo motu notice has been taken by the Commission,” reads the opening paragraph of the orders passed by the panel comprising Justice Dhawan and members MP Singh (IAS) and Savinder Singh.

“A copy of this order, along with the news item, be sent to the ADGP, NRI and Women Wing, Punjab, for appropriate action,” reads the orders. The commission has observed that around 10 victims, including Avtar Singh of Bhadaur and Manpreet Singh Channon on Dehliz Road, Ahmedgarh, who had gone to Dubai in search of greener pastures, got stuck there and they had no resources to come back to India. The Malwa youths who had been working in an industrial unit at Saja in Dubai had sought help from the Centre and social organisations to facilitate their return.
