Saayoni Ghosh gets bail

New Delhi: Trinamool Youth Congress president Saayoni Ghosh was granted bail on Monday after being arrested by the Tripura Police on various charges, including attempt to murder, on Sunday. Ghosh was in Tripura to campaign for the upcoming municipal elections. She had allegedly disturbed a poll rally of BJP leader and state CM Biplab Kumar Deb on Sunday. TNS

“We told him in detail how leaders were being arrested and MPs being beaten up. He told us that he had spoken to the Tripura CM on phone yesterday and assured us that he would seek a report from the state,” TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee.

According to the TMC MPs, Shah assured them that violence against the TMC in Tripura would stop.

“We thank the @HMOIndia for meeting with our MPs. The MPs submitted a memorandum regarding the brutality that our candidates, leaders, workers as well as supporters faced in Tripura. The situation is grave and worrisome,” the TMC tweeted.

The TMC is set to challenge the BJP in the Assembly elections in Tripura slated to take place in 2023. A dress rehearsal of the showdown is slated to take place on November 25 when polls will take place in 10 urban local bodies of the state. The TMC, which is yet to have any representation in any of the elected bodies of Tripura, is set to contest the civic polls only in Agartala for the municipal corporation there.

TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee was today denied permission by the local police to hold a “padayatra” in Agartala. Tomorrow is the last day of campaigning for the civic polls.

Abhishek alleged that East Agartala All Women Police Station, where the actress-turned-TMC leader was kept, was attacked by BJP goons last night. They allegedly thrashed TMC supporters and did not even spare journalists. Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, who flew to Delhi today for a three-day tour, is expected to take up the Tripura issue with the PM on Wednesday.
