Two labourers lost their lives after trapping under mound of sand during illegal mining near Ajnala on Monday. Third labourer sustained injuries and was under treatment at the Ajanala Civil Hospital.
The deceased were identified as Kulwinder Singh and Ghuman Singh, while the injured was identified as Sukhdev Singh.
According to information, two farmers of Chak Aul village in Ajnala Jugraj Singh and his brother Sukhraj Singh were illegally excavating sand from their agricultural land. Today, when they were digging the sand a mound of sand fell on them leaving them trapped beneath it. Immediately people gathered at the spot. But by the time they pulled them out, Kulwinder and Ghuman had died. Their bodies were sent to the Civil Hospital for postmortem.
Illegal sand mining from river beds and agricultural fields is rampant in the Ajnala and Ramdass belt. However, the police as well as the Mining Department have miserably failed to curb the same. Political shelter is one of the biggest reasons for the peril. — TNS
