Two car-borne miscreants opened fire on a police team near Sanjay Gandhi Colony when it signalled them to stop the vehicle on Monday.
The police managed to arrest one suspect identified as Amritpal Singh, a resident of Mohalla Sheikhupura in Jandiala Guru. But, his accomplice Baljit Singh, alias Kanta, of the same locality, managed to give the police the slip.
The police have also recovered over 700 sedative pills and an illegal firearm from him. The car has also been impounded.
Over five cases of dacoity, violence and under the NDPS Act are registered against Amritpal, said the police, adding that he was declared a proclaimed offender by the court in three cases.
Sub-Inspector Warris Masih, who is investigating the issue, said the police had laid a naka near Sanjay Gandhi Colony that came under the Ranjit Avenue police station here. He said around 10.30 pm, a car (PB-02-BS-7501) was signalled to stop.
“The occupants stopped the car a few meters before the checkpoint and tried to escape after reversing the vehicle. While doing so, the occupants also fired two gunshots on the police team,” said the Sub-Inspector.
He added that while Baljit managed to flee in the dark, the police overpowered Amritpal and arrested him. While searching the car, the police seized intoxicants, pistol, a magazine and four live bullets from the car.
A case under Sections 307, 353 and 186 of the IPC and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act has been registered against them. The Sub-Inspector said raids were on to nab Baljit.
