Acting on a piece of information given by two smugglers during interrogation, the Cantonment police on Monday arrested a Ugandan national and recovered 100 gm of heroin from her. She was identified as Rachel, alias Azel, residing in New Delhi for the past seven years.
ADCP Lakhbir Singh said the police had arrested Anil Kumar of Partap Nagar, Chheharta, and Sahil Sharma of Kot Khalsa, for allegedly possessing 800 gm of heroin. They were produced in a court which sent them to police custody for further interrogation. They were caught at a checkpoint on the Ram Tirath road at the backside of Guru Nanak Dev University.
During their interrogation, it was found that they used to procure the contraband from the Ugandan national in Delhi. A police team was sent to Delhi to arrest her. However, they came to know that she had come to Amritsar. Later, she was nabbed here.
According to the police, she had been into this trade for years. She had many links, who used to sell heroin in retail in Amritsar and its adjoining areas. The police are trying to ascertain her links and whom did she purchased the contraband from.
As the cops faced trouble while talking to her, they sought the help of linguists experts from Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), said ADCP Lakhbir Singh. The police have registered a case under the NDPS Act against her and further investigation is under way.
