Malout, October 4

A pall of gloom descended on Shergarh village when the tragic news about the demise of four members of a family in a road mishap near Alamwala village reached here on Thursday morning. All deceased belonged to farmer Gurpreet’s family, who also died in the mishap.

Gurpreet was the sole breadwinner in the family, who owned just about five acres. His father has been rendered bed-ridden by some disease.

Some village residents said last evening he had gone to pay obeisance near Sirhind and within a few minutes, he started the return journey by his Alto car. However, after reaching near his village, he lost control over the car, which rammed into a tree.

Gurpreet was in a hurry because his father was alone at home.

Those died in the road mishap included Gurpreet Singh, his 55-year-old mother Jaswinder Kaur, three-year-old daughter Gurvir Kaur and two-month-old niece Gurnaz Kaur.

Those injured have been identified as Gurpreet’s wife Rajvir Kaur, daughter Gurbachan Kaur and sister Ramandeep Kaur.

Ramandeep and Gurbachan were shifted to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital at Faridkot while Rajvir Kaur is recuperating at Malout.

Sources said those sitting on the seats of the ill-fated vehicle died because of a LPG cylinder lying in it. “The cylinder supposedly hit the necks of two of his family members who died,” they said.

The four were later cremated in the evening at the village crematorium.
