City boys log 11-run victory over Kurukshetra

Chandigarh, March 4

Riding on brilliant performances by Ankit Laller (59) and Shasya Jamwal (3/29), Chandigarh defeated Kurukshetra by 11 runs in the opening match of the Samuel Banerjee Trophy Triangular Cricket Tournament at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, here today.

Batting first, Chandigarh scored 161 runs in 34.4 overs. Laller scored 59 off 65 balls, studded with seven boundaries. He was supported by Nikhil Thakur who contributed 34 off 64 balls, with three boundaries, to the total.

Devesh Thardak claimed 4/41 while Sachin Gahlot took 3/ 21 for Kurukshetra.

In reply, Kurukshetra were bowled out for 150 runs in 38.2 overs. Mrigank Sharma contributed 38 off 40 balls while Gahlot (21), Sanmeet Singh (20) and Naman Malik (18) were the other main scorers. Jamwal was the pick of the bowlers as he claimed 3/18 while Ankit Chaudhary took 2/18.

Three teams — Chandigarh Cricket Association, Panchkula Cricket Association and Kurukshetra Cricket Association —are participating in the tournament. The tournament is being conducted by the Chandigarh Cricket Association (affiliated to the Haryana Cricket Association) in the memory of late veteran sports journalist Samuel Banerjee, who died at the age of 57. His brother Donald Banerjee inaugurated the tournament today.
