Much ado about nothing

Apropos the news report ''Credit war between P’kula MLA, Mayor" (Chandigarh Tribune, June 17), it was intriguing to learn that a credit war has already begun between the local MLA and the Mayor despite the fact that the Haryana Government is yet to give its approval for the shifting of the garbage dumping ground from Sector 23 to Bhanu village.

Apropos the news report ‘Credit war between P’kula MLA, Mayor” (Chandigarh Tribune, June 17), it was intriguing to learn that a credit war has already begun between the local MLA and the Mayor despite the fact that the Haryana Government is yet to give its nod for the shifting of the garbage dumping ground from Sector 23 to Bhanu village. Curiously enough, while city MLA Gian Chand Gupta wishes to earn some points just for having written a letter to Haryana CM for shifting the extant dumping ground, Mayor Upinder Kaur Ahluwalia too does not wish to be lag behind by proudly claiming that it was she, who had ‘chaired” the MC House meeting in which the proposal was passed last year. Oh really? But, for sure, the ongoing ‘street fighting’ between them does not augur well for their respective public images. In any case, there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel for the adversely affected residents living in and around Sector 23 in Panchkula. What an irony?

No let-up in snatching cases

Snatching cases are on the rise. Around 142 cases have been reported from the tricity this year. There are several obvious reasons for the soaring crime rate, especially against women and children. Women and children are considered easy targets as they can be intimidated and children can be lured easily. The people behind such crimes are generally drug addicts. Refusal from home led them to snatching incidents. They can even kill somebody for the money that would help them in buying intoxicants. The show-off also leads to a rise in such crimes as nowadays youth prefer to show off their latest gadgets, or other possessions through the social media. Why there is no let-up in snatching cases? In the recent times, several cases of theft of two-wheelers were also reported in Patiala and Chandigarh. In Patiala, three vehicles were lifted in a single day. The miscreants in such cases are always two steps ahead of the police. The authorities should act tough against the culprits. CCTV cameras should be installed at every nook and corner and faulty cameras should be repaired.

Exorbitant parking charges at mall

I went to Elante mall in the city to watch a movie. I was there for four hours and I was charged Rs 90 for parking my car. When I asked the reason for the same from the person concerned there, the reply was that parking fee is doubled on weekends. The UT Administration should act against such malpractices.
