Chandigarh, October 17

A workshop on ‘Advanced photonics technologies in sensing, communication and instrumentation’ began at Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO) here today as part of its diamond jubilee celebrations.

Discussing novel approaches in photonic technologies for fast, continuous and non-contact diagnostics, Prof Zeev Zalevsky, director of the Nano Photonics Centre at the Institute of Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials at Bar-Ilan University in Israel, said the hands-on training would be a good opportunity for budding researchers to explore and enhance their skills.

He described remote and contactless measurement of biomedical parameters resulting from tiny surface motions, both directly and indirectly, based on unique and patented methods for speckle analysis.

Prof RK Sinha, CSIO Director, said optics and photonics has been one of the main thrust areas of the CSIO.

Dr Vinod Karar, Head of optics division at the CSIO, discussed major advances in technologies in trans-disciplinary area. Research and development activities in optics and photonics has always remained a key focus area of the CSIO and several research outcomes of the laboratory in optical instrumentation have been used in strategic instruments and sensors for the armed forces in the recent past. — TNS
