Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal on Wednesday has written a letter to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to ensure that the culprits involved in the gangrape of a 13-year-old girl in a dharamshala near Moradabad be arrested.

The commission received a letter from the girl’s mother, who said that on June 30, she along with her husband, daughter and relatives was returning from a temple near Moradabad. They decided to stay in a dharamshala near the temple where an unknown person offered them soft drinks. The family members fell unconscious after having the drinks. Later, they were admitted to Deen Dayal Hospital in Moradabad where they regained consciousness.

After returning home, the minor complained of severe abdominal pain. She was admitted to GTB Hospital in Delhi where the doctor reported that the girl had been gangraped and her private parts had been severely damaged. After surgery, her condition was reported to be critical.

Her mother informed members of the commission that despite repeated requests, the UP Police had been reluctant in recording the statements of the family and registering an FIR under the POCSO Act. The DCW chief urged the Chief Minister to ensure that an FIR be registered under relevant Sections and the accused were arrested immediately. She requested him to ensure proper compensation to the economically backward family.

Maliwal met the victim and her family in the hospital and promised full support from the commission. She said, “It is terrible that crime against women is increasing in the country. I appeal to the UP Chief Minister to take a compassionate view in the matter and ensure registration of FIR along with proper compensation to the girl.”
