Defacement: Police act tough, register 6 cases

CHANDIGARH: With the Panjab University student council elections around the corner, the UT police have initiated a campaign against defacement in the city by parties.

With the Panjab University student council elections around the corner, the UT police have initiated a campaign against defacement in the city by parties. Six cases have been registered by the police for defacement.

Among those booked are Sandeep Singh, alias Deep, of DAV College, Sector 10, whose posters were found pasted at a bus stop in Sector 32.

A case against unknown persons was registered for pasting posters of the GGSU in the Sector 11 market.

Another case was registered against unknown persons for pasting posters of the ISA on the road dividing Sectors 15 and 11.

The police have also booked Sampat Mehra, chairman of the NSUI, SGGS College, Sector 26, whose posters were found pasted on an electric pole and at the bus stop near the college.

Parveen Jaat, campus in charge of the NSUI, SGGS College, Sector 26, was also booked as his posters were found pasted at a bus stop near the college. Unknown persons were booked for pasting posters of the SOI on a pillar in the Sector 10 market. All violators have been booked under Section 3 of the Prevention of Defacement of Property Act. 

Posters to be removed

DP Singh, Sub-Inspector (Enforcement), MC, said an intensive drive to remove the posters would be carried out in the coming days following directions from senior MC officials.

Joint team set up to check violations

The UT Administration has constituted a joint team of the Department of Controller, Civil Defence, the MC enforcement branch and the UT police to check defacement of property in the city, including the Panjab University campus. The teams have already inspected markets in Sectors 10, 11, 16, 26, 42 and 46, the Leisure Valley, the PU campus and the outer road of Sector 25, Chandigarh. The inspection will continue till the student elections are held.
