Kaithal, March 27

Articles worth lakhs were destroyed in a fire that broke out in the Siwan Gate branch of the Central Bank of India here. The fire was caused by a short circuit, it is believed.

Interestingly, nobody noticed the fire that destroyed air conditioners, computers and other articles on the bank premises.

The incident came to light when peon Jitender Kumar opened the bank today.

Bank manager Sunita Rani said the bank staff had left the premises on Friday evening. Saturday and Sunday being holidays, no one turned up at the bank. However, when peon opened the bank today, he found articles badly burnt. She said the records and cash were safe.

The police have registered a case in this connection.

The bank manager said though electricity wires were burnt, the CCTV camera and its DVD were safe, which could throw light on the cause of the fire. — OC
