Shimla, May 30

The Umang Foundation, a public welfare trust, has sought Governor Acharya Dev Vrat’s intervention in providing hostel facility to visually and hearing impaired students, who have passed Class X and intend to continue their studies in the special school at Dhalli, Shimla.

In a statement issued here today, foundation chairman Ajay Shrivastav, who submitted a memorandum to the Governor on the issue, said the government upgraded the school, being run by the State Child Welfare Council, up to Class XII, but did not make arrangements for a hostel. Poor students were being asked to live in PG accommodation, he claimed.

He urged the Governor, who is also the President of the State Child Welfare Council, to intervene in providing hostel facility to the students.

“The students are from poor families of far-flung areas. They have been asked to stay in PG accommodation to continue their studies,” he alleged.

He claimed that the school authorities had declined to arrange for hostel accommodation. As many as 20 students, including 19 differently abled, passed Class X recently. They could not afford to live in private accommodation, he added. — TNS
