An innovation in the field of arthroplasty has made the replacement of hip and knee joints easier, simple and more accurate, says designer surgeon Dr Wolfgang Klauser, Deputy Medical Director of the HELIOS ENDO Klink Hamburg, Germany, who attended the 1st Elite Arthroplasty Congress-2015 being organised by Max Elite Institute of Orthopedics and Joint Replacement.

Over 300 arthroplasty surgeons besides designer surgeons of latest implants participated in the conference. The implants were not just launched for the first time in north India but demonstrated to participating delegates through live surgeries.

As many as 12 topics, ranging from new advancements in arthroplasty, insights on various procedures to new practices, were discussed during panel discussions.

Besides, 3DKnee, a high flexion total knee replacement, was launched at the conference.

Dr Manuj Wadhwa, Director and Head, Max Elite Institute of Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement, Mohali, and Dr Sabine Sachmitt, Head, Department of Orthopaedics Surgery, Martha-Maria Hospital, Halle, Germany, performed live knee replacement surgery.

Dr Wadhwa said 3DKnee was developed after a decade-long research and was launched in India at this conference.

There is good news for patients undergoing hip replacement surgeries. They will be now able to walk the same day through Short Modular Femoral (SMF) Hip System, which was also launched today.

“SMF Hip System is a modular total hip replacement stem system, which involves less bone loss but provides the same stability of the traditional longer and more invasive implant, and the patient can walk on the same day,” said Prof Francesco Falez, designer surgeon of SMF Hip System and chief of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Hospital of Santo Spirito, Rome, Italy.
