Mohali will soon have an electric crematorium as the Municipal Corporation has started planning the project even as a facelift is being given to the cremation ground by the civic body at a cost of about Rs 45 lakh.

So far, residents of Mohali, who wished to use the facility of the electric crematorium to cremate their loved ones, had to go to the Chandigarh cremation ground.

The electric crematorium projects installed in various parts of the country are being studied by officials of the engineering wing of the civic body and a proposal in this regard will be put up at the general house meeting to be held next month. It is estimated that Rs 50 lakh will have to be spent on providing the facility.

Work on giving a facelift to the cremation ground is likely to start this week. The old sheds at the cremation ground are being replaced with new ones and fire bricks are being laid in the areas where bodies are cremated. The shortcomings at the cremation ground were noticed by Kulwant Singh, Mayor, and Uma Shakar Gupta, MC Commissioner, during a joint inspection of the area.

It was also decided to have 25 more lockers at the cremation ground apart from providing an RO water system. It is learnt that Rs 2,78,167 is being spent on improving the condition of the area where children’s bodies are buried. New sheds are being provided at a cost of Rs 10,03,716 while another Rs 1,79,807 will be spent on brick work. Kota stone will be laid in a part of the cremation ground at a cost of Rs 1,79,008 and work of dry brick paving in the cremation area will be done by spending Rs 1,89,866.
