Dehradun, January 31

The police today foiled a march of members of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) from the Congress Bhavan to the Uttarakhand BJP headquarters in Dehradun. The NSUI was protesting against the Central government for bringing amendments to the Land Acquisition Act.

The police intercepted the marchers at Captain Bhatia Chowk near the Doon Club and used water cannons on the student leaders to disperse them. The NSUI activists ran helter and skelter.

The police had made elaborate arrangements at the BJP headquarters to prevent the NSUI activists from creating a law and order situation.

Meanwhile, the BJP city leaders said they would welcome the NSUI leaders and give them the membership of the party. “We are waiting for NSUI leaders to come and join the party. Our registers are ready to mark them as members,” said Neelam Sehgal, president of the BJP city unit.

The BJP leaders burnt an effigy of the Congress at Fountain Chowk (Nehru Colony) in protest against the highhanded manner in which former Union minister Jayanthi Natarajan had been treated.

Earlier, Uttarakhand Congress president Kishore Upadhyay flagged off the march.
