Should I go in for extension towards west wall?

Q. My house is a south-facing one. We are renovating the house and may extend it towards the west wall. Is it ok according to Vaastu principles? - Raman Sharma

A. South facing houses have earned a very bad reputation and many people believe that this is not a good direction for a house. However, a south-facing house can be the very auspicious, if and only if it follows certain very specific Vaastu principles.

If all parts of the house are perfect i.e. at 90 degrees, then the house is good for the inhabitants. For example if the north-east block is extended towards north or east or north-east then it is favourable for the residents. If the south-east is extended towards east then that may create may problems for the inhabitants. If the south-east is extended towards south-east side, then that can have very adverse effects and accidents may also happen if the part is extended towards the south-east corner.

In your case the extension is towards the western wall. Vaastu wise if south-west is extended towards south or west or south-west is also not good. Here you must check how much part is being extended and which direction is it extended towards. Although it is not advisable to extend this portion, yet if it is completely unavoidable then you may follow the following solution.

" Remedy: Bury a silver strip beneath the entrance gate of the house to combat the malefic influence created after the renovation. Or you may affix a Vaastu Dosh Nivarak Yantra on the entry door on a Saturday.

Is a trapezium-shaped plot auspicious?

Q. My house is built on a trapezium-shaped plot wherein the front side is wider than the back. It is east-facing and its extended side is north-east (ishan kone). Are these directions suitable for my family as we are planning to move into this new house very soon? - Vikas Raj

A. According to Vaastu Shastra, the 'shape' affects the well being of the inmates. Some shapes have a good effect, while others have a bad effect.

Pentagon, hexagon, octagon shaped sites are not considered good. However, if these shapes are made rectangular or square by building a Vaastu compound wall, so that it appears to be a square or rectangular site, it can be used. The reasoning - just like in a triangle-shaped site there will be lot of wastage of land around the building and so it is not considered worth the money you spend for the land.

Your new house which has been built with projections/extensions in the north or east are considered good. The reason being that north-east is the direction from which the sun's rays enter the house in the morning and so if this corner is projected, there can be a lot more open space that will ensure more unobstructed sunlight.

As such the new home will remain favourable for the family. You should prefer the auspicious dates for griha pravesh and enter after proper sanctification and purification as per your faith in the religious rituals. Ensure that the house is 'free' from all labourers and mechanics before you step in.
