The Medical Council of India’s (MCI) decision to permit Maharishi Markandeshwar Medical College and Hospital to admit 150 students in the third batch of MBBS for 2015-16 session and recommending to the Union Health Ministry not to renew admissions to 50 additional seats at Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda, in Kangra has raised many eyebrows.

Taking exception to the decision taken by the MCI, Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) president Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has written a letter to Union Health Minister JP Nadda, asking for an inquiry into the matter and taking necessary action.

Alleging that undue preference was given by the MCI to MMM College at Kumarhatti (Solan), Sukhu expressed surprise that the MCI was not willing to increase the MBBS seats at Indira Gandhi Medical College, which was setup in 1966 and DRPGMC, Tanda, which was established in 1996 and had pointed out some shortcomings on flimsy grounds but ignored the same in case of MMM College.

In the letter, he said: “I would like to inform you that Maharishi Markandeshwar Medical College lacks hospital facilities. It does not even have the requisite number of indoor patients required for training and research purposes and I fail to understand as to how the permission was granted to MMU to take in 150 MBBS students.”
