Chandigarh, November 24

An incomplete building of Government Primary School, Sector 49-D, was inaugurated by UT Adviser Vijay Kumar Dev here today.

The school is scheduled to open for students from the next session (March 2016). The hurry shown in inaugurating the incomplete building has raised many an eyebrow. There is no power supply in the building while windowpanes in washrooms and a few classes are yet to be fixed. In view of the Adviser's visit, special arrangements were made and certain areas of the building were done up nicely. However, the rear end of the building was in a shambles and the finishing work in classrooms on the first and second floors of the building was not yet over.

“The building is fully complete and only the finishing touches are left. The session is scheduled to start from March. We are yet to buy furniture and fix windowpanes. The electricity connection has deliberately not been given and the building will get power supply near the start of the session. Our main purpose was to take possession of the building from the contractor, which we took a few days ago,” said Mukesh Anand, Chief Engineer of the Municipal Corporation.

The Adviser, while addressing a gathering on the occasion, said the city would have more primary schools, which would offer quality education. “This school will also help the Education Department promote quality education. The department now needs to ensure proper enrolment of children in the school,” said Dev.

The building is spread over 1.13 acres and has 19 classrooms, a principal room, a staff room, a computer lab, toilet blocks, a ramp and stairs in the three-storeyed building. The total construction cost of the building has been estimated at Rs 3.4 crore.

According to sources, the building was inaugurated in a hurry before the Adviser’s visit abroad, which is expected to start in December.
