Private schools take lead in observing Earth Day

Jammu, April 23

Although Earth Day, which was observed on April 22, passed off without any major event being organised by the state government, private schools ensured that children come to know about the need to protect environment.

In several schools, nursery children were asked to bring saplings and dress themselves in green colour to give them an idea of plant life and its role in natural world.

“We like this idea of celebrating a day dedicated to environment protection. Those who study in kindergarten will actually face the effects of climate change. They must know about their future,” said Amit Sharma, whose daughter studies in a kindergarten.

A function was also organised at Kidzee School, Roop Nagar Enclave, where students were told about trees and their role in preserving environment. “Environmental protection should be taught to the children as in coming decades they will become planners, scientists and leaders,” said Ashwani Kumar, a local resident.

At British International School, a poster-making contest was held for students to instil the values about earth preservation. “The main aim of the event was to motivate and spread awareness among the students on the ways to save the earth. ‘The earth does not belong to us, we belong to the earth,” said a statement. — TNS
