Buddha Nullah still swollen

As water was flowing at danger mark in Buddha Nullah on second day, the sewerage system remained nonfunctional in several areas located near the drain. Sewage flowed back into the streets of Shivpuri, New Kundan Puri, Dhoka Mohala and some other areas. Besides, the drain’s dirty water also accumulated at underpass near Chand Cinema.

The MC has also stopped releasing water from Jamalpur STP into swollen Buddha Nullah. Thus, sewage is overflowing on Rahon Road and adjoining areas. The Rahon Road was flooded due to overflowing sewage.

Residents blamed the civic body authorities for taking any required measures to provide them relief. Narinder Kumar, a resident of Shivpuri, said, “Stinking water is getting accumulated on the streets. We are forced to live under unsanitary conditions. The MC must take immediate steps otherwise there are chances of a disease outbreak.”

Pedestrians face major inconvenience as they are forced to walk through overflowing sewage in the affected areas. A shopkeeper on Rahon Road said, “For the past one year, the area witnessed overflowing sewage, but the situation has worsened now. We don’t know when the civic body will take required measures to provide us relief from stinking water.”

Ludhiana East MLA Sanjay Talwar said, “The Irrigation Department has released water from outside city areas into Buddha Nullah. As the flow of water in Buddha Nullah is high, the MC has stopped its Sewerage Treatment Plant at Jamalpur for now. STP at Bhattian was also not functioning due to swollen Sutlej. The problem will be resolved soon.”
