Amritsar, September 21

Former Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai on Friday visited the historic Jallianwalla Bagh here, as part of his two-day visit to the holy city.

He paid floral tributes to the martyrs who had laid down their lives for India’s freedom.

On April 13, 1919, Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer had ordered opening of fire at an unarmed gathering of men, women, and children without warning at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar on Baisakhi day.

Karzai later visited the Partition museum, dedicated to the memory of India’s partition in 1947.

He spent some time there, hearing partition stories and looking at objects carried by people as they fled their homes and moved across the newly-drawn borders at the time of Independence.

On Thursday, Karzai had paid obeisance at the Golden Temple.

Karzai had also called on Chief Minister Amarinder Singh Thursday at the latter’s official residence at Chandigarh. During the meeting, Singh assured Karzai of greater strategic support and cooperation to the war-torn nation. — PTI
