Bathinda, November 13

The Mansa police and activists of BKU (Dakaunda) came face to face today when the former stopped them from proceeding towards Mansa City-2 police station to gherao it. They were seeking release of tractors of farmers booked for stubble burning. Their tractors were impounded by the police yesterday.

Trouble broke out when BKU activists started from Khiala Kalan village towards the police station. The police got a tip-off about their plan and intercepted them on the way, after which the union members staged a dharna. According to sources, some union leaders had reportedly prompted farmers having their fields close to Police Lines in Mansa to set their stubble ablaze on Tuesday. Subsequently, the police arrested some union leaders and farmers. The farmers were released last night. — TNS
