Utility vehicle sales see steady rise in Feb

Buoyed by an increasing demand for u tility vehicles, passenger vehicle makers continued to report a steady rise in sales in February 2024 compared to the same month last year.

Maruti Suzuki, the country’s largest carmaker, posted a growth of 82.5% in sales of utility vehicles to 61,234 units, whereas the passenger car sales contracted year-on-year by 15.3% to 86,890 units in February. Overall, Maruti Suzuki reported the total passenger vehicle (PV) sales of 160,271 units in the domestic market in February this year as compared to 147,467 units February 2023, a growth of 8.7%.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd registered the sale of 60,501 units in February. Tarun Garg, COO, Hyundai Motor India Ltd said, “The newly launched Hyundai Creta clocked the sale of 15, 276 units in February which incidentally is the highest-ever monthly sales recorded by ‘Brand CRETA’ since its inception in India in 2015.”

Further, Tata Motors sold 51,267 units in the domestic market last month as against 42,862 units in February 2023, a growth of 20%. In the utility vehicles segment, Mahindra & Mahindra sold 42,401 vehicles in the domestic market, a growth of 40% and overall, 42,941 units, including exports.

Veejay Nakra, president, automotive division, M&M Ltd, said: “To make some of our SUVs available faster to consumers, we launched the Scorpio N Z8S variant and the Thar Earth edition this month.” Toyota Kirloskar Motor reported its highest sale of 25,220 units in February, posting a growth of 61% over the same period last year. Domestic sales stood at 23,300 units, its exports stood at 1,920 units in the month.
