Patiala, February 26

Deputy Commissioner Kumar Amit has ordered a special girdawari of tomato crop that was damaged due to frost in several villages of Sanaur block in the district.

He has asked the officials concerned to finish the girdawari by March 2 and submit a report on or before March 5. The assessment of the damaged crop will be conducted by the kanungo and revenue officials under the supervision of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM).

Tomato crop on over 100 acres in villages was damaged due to ground frost during the extended winter.

Aggrieved farmers had demanded help from the state government. The farmers had said the tomato crop was completely damaged due to the frost. The crop had dried up due to the frost in Asarpur, Jogipur, Kartarpur, Nurkhedi, Budhanpur, Basar and other villages of the block.

Agricultural experts had made an appeal to the government to provide compensation to the affected farmers.

Sanaur MLA Harinder Pal Chandumjara had raised the issue in the ongoing Budget session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha. After this, orders for a special girdawari were issued by the Deputy Commissioner.

The Sanaur MLA said, “When I visited the villages, farmers complained that no one from the Agriculture Department visited them. I took up the issue with the officials concerned and raised the issue in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha.”

He said the state government should immediately provide compensation after the girdawari.
