In the midst of escalating tensions over the formation of the standing committee, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) witnessed yet another uproar during its recent session on Monday.

The Opposition, demanding committee elections, clashed with the Mayor, who has sought Supreme Court’s intervention to grant standing committee powers to the House.

The controversy deepened as the Mayor moved the apex court merely a day before the scheduled House session. Opposition members argued that the court had not restricted standing committee elections and nominated members were already in place.

The Mayor’s alleged apprehensions of potential cross-voting and a loss of authority, particularly concerning the permanent committee chairman’s position has fuelled their claims, according to the Opposition.

The deadlock in the house led to its abrupt adjournment, with BJP councillors obstructing proceedings due to the unresolved conflict. This impasse raises concerns about the effective functioning of the municipal body and its ability to address crucial matters.

In a separate attack on the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, Leader of the Opposition, Raja Iqbal Singh, accused the party of prioritising tax hikes over citizen welfare. He said the party’s controversial attempt to quadruple parking fees, which was subsequently halted after strong opposition from the BJP.

He criticised the AAP-led Delhi Government for suspending public transportation services and their plans to increase parking fees, causing inconvenience to the citizens.

He pointed out that these decisions contribute to the burden on the public rather than ensuring their welfare, especially considering the challenges posed by the rising air pollution levels in the city.

Singh stressed there were financial contradictions within the AAP, citing their claim of insufficient funds for employee salaries while allegedly spending Rs 10 lakh on extravagant meals. He accused the ruling party of suppressing dissent by suspending employees. He said that since assuming control of the corporation, AAP had failed to undertake any significant initiatives for citizens.
