Panipat, October 21

About 65 per cent voters exercised their franchise at 864 polling booths in four Assembly seats of Panipat.

Voting was slow initially, raising concerns among candidates. But in the final hours, the turnout picked pace, touching 60 per cent till 6 pm. Voters were in queue at scores of polling stations after 6 pm.

Till 5.30 pm, only 58.9 per cent of voters had exercised their franchise in the district. Panipat City recorded a turnout of only 46.3 per cent till 6 pm, while it was 56.3 per cent in Israna, 63.6 per cent in Panipat Rural and 69 per cent in Israna constituency till 5.30 pm.

DC Sumedha Kataria said 22 VVPAT machines had to be replaced because of some technical snag, but the polling was not halted.

There were 26 all-women polling stations and 73 model booths in the four constituencies, she added.
