A meeting of district-level vigilance committee constituted under Manual Scavengers (Prohibition of Employment and Rehabilitation) Act 2013, was held here today.
Presiding over the meeting, Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Repswal directed the Chamba Municipal Council, Dalhousie Cantonment Board, Dalhousie, and Bakloh to provide detailed information if any case of manual scavenging gets reported in their areas. He said manual scavenging is prohibited under the Manual Scavengers Act 2013 as it is an evil practice that leads to social discrimination and diseases.
A violation of the act may result in imprisonment, fines, or both.
He instructed officials to provide information regarding dry and unhygienic toilets (without septic tanks), as well as notify subdivisions magistrates about such cases.
During the meeting, District Welfare Officer Chaman Lal Sharma informed that the practice of manual scavenging has been completely eradicated in the district and no such cases have been reported.
Deputy Chairperson of Chamba Municipal Council Seema Kashyap, Tehsildar Sandeep Kumar and Chief Executive Officer of Dalhousie Cantonment Mabel Christian, along with various officials, were present in the meeting.
