The 498-km Bilaspur-Leh railway line project has emerged as an issue in the Mandi byelection. The need for the project is been felt more now as China has expanded its rail and road infrastructure close to the Indian border.
It was the dream project of former BJP MP Ram Swaroop Sharma. The Congress and BJP candidates are again raising the issue to woo voters.
Congress leader Kaul Singh Thakur says, “This project is strategically important but the state and Central governments have failed to execute it. It was a poll plank of the BJP during the Lok Sabha elections in 2014 and 2019 but nothing has happened on the ground”.—TNS
