New Delhi, February 20
An MP/MLA court in Uttar Pradesh’s Sultanpur district today granted bail to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in connection with a defamation case lodged against him for allegedly making a statement against present Union Home Minister Amit Shah in 2018.
Gandhi secured bail on a surety of Rs 25,000 and a personal bond of the same amount. The court has not given any further date in the matter.
The defamation case, filed by BJP leader Vijay Mishra in 2018, accuses Gandhi of making defamatory comments against Shah at a press conference in Bengaluru. He had allegedly called Shah, the then BJP president, a “murder accused”.
About four years prior to Gandhi’s remark, a special CBI court in Mumbai had cleared Shah of the charges in a 2005 fake encounter case. That decision came during Shah’s tenure as the Minister of State for Home in Gujarat.
“He (Rahul Gandhi) surrendered in the court today. He surrendered and the court took him into custody for 30-45 minutes. After that, his bail application was submitted and it was accepted (by the court),” said Advocate Santosh Pandey, who represented Vijay Mishra.
