Jammu, January 23

Security measure were strengthened on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway after security forces received an input regarding suspicious movement of a vehicle on the vital link to the Valley.

Headed for Jammu: police

  • It has been learnt that the police have detected the ‘suspicious’ movement of a vehicle from Kashmir towards Jammu
  • The CRPF has set up checkpoints along the highway. It is being scanned for the presence of any IEDs or explosives
  • The security forces are using drones and dog squads to monitor security situation on the NH in the wake of the alert

An alert has been issued ahead of Republic Day in the entire Union Territory, however, following the input, security has been tightened on the highway in all districts of Jammu division.

It has been learnt that the police have detected the movement of a suspicious vehicle coming from Kashmir towards Jammu. However, there has been no official confirmation or details regarding the matter so far.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was deployed along the NH in Udhampur, where the personnel checked all vehicles coming to Jammu from Kashmir. While the exercise is routine ahead of any national event, security forces and intelligence agencies are leaving no stone unturned in the wake of terror attacks in Rajouri and Poonch last year.

“137 Battalion of the CRPF has been deployed in Udhampur to frisk all vehicles and keep an eye on any suspicious activity. With the Republic Day approaching, we are not leaving any loopholes in the security grid, for which a maximum number of security personnel have been deployed on the ground,” a senior police official said.

The CRPF personnel have set up checkpoints at various locations along the highway. The Srinagar-Jammu NH is being scanned for the presence of any IEDs or explosives. Patrol teams of the J&K Police and the CRPF are making rounds of the highway and not leaving even an inch of the road unmonitored, the official said.

A CRPF official said the inputs about suspicious movement are often received at such times, which can be correct as well as incorrect.

“However, it is important to be alert in such situations,” he added.

Security forces are using drones and dog squads to monitor the security situation on the NH in the wake of the alert.
