Old age and disability were no deterrent factors for many in the Assembly elections. In Ludhiana district, 14 polling booths were set up which were managed by Persons with Disability (PwD). To encourage the persons with disabilities, the entire staff deputed in these booths were differently abled. Specially abled and elderly people showed enthusiasm at polling booths to exercise their right to franchise.
Satinder Singh, after casting his vote at Dashmesh High School, Gill Road, said it was a different experience to cast vote at a booth managed by PwD.
“Seeing specially abled performing election duties has really set a goal for everyone. Nobody should try to skip the duty but come forward to perform duty,” he said.
Darun Kumar, who was on duty at a polling booth managed by PWDs at BVM, Kitchlu Nagar, said: “It feels good to be a part of the election system. It is an encouraging move by the administration,” he said.
Darshan Singh, a specially abled man, said he was happy that he was able to cast his vote in a hassle- free environment. “I was given a red rose after casting my vote. I am happy that I live in a democratic country like India,” he said.
Harjit Kaur (84) from Salem Tabri was happy to receive an appreciation certificate and a chocolate from polling staff after casting her vote.
“I am unable to come due to my old age but Dr Inderjit Singh insisted me and brought me here. I am happy that I decided to vote and getting a chocolate and certificate was a delighted experience,” she said.
Satvir Singh, a 80-year-old voter who cast his vote in the Ludhiana North constituency, said it was the right of every citizen to cast the vote and he was happy that he had done his job. “if I can do my daily chores, why not vote, age should not get in way of our rights,” he said.
