The School of Organic Farming, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), here, organised a field day on ‘Production and Processing of Turmeric’ at the field of Tarsem Singh at Neela Naloya village, Hoshiarpur, on Monday. It was sponsored by the Directorate of Arecanut and Spices Development, Calicut, Kerala. About 30 farmers participated in it. Dr Rajender Kumar, senior agronomist and principal investigator of the programme, discussed the importance of turmeric and its increasing consumption due to health benefits. He told farmers to grow turmeric at least to meet their domestic requirements.
Dr Tarsem C Mittal, senior extension engineer, shared techniques for the processing of turmeric. Dr Gurpartap Singh, district extension specialist (agronomy), Farm Advisory Service Centre, Hoshiarpur informed them about the scope of turmeric in Hoshiarpur district. Dr Manisha Thakur, olericulturist, apprised the farmers of organic certification of turmeric for higher benefits. The turmeric seeds were also distributed among farmers. — TNS
