Ludhiana, December 8

A bride and her family faced huge embarrassment as the groom refused to get married due to the ‘unfullfiled’ dowry demand. Since the marriage was called off at the eleventh hour by the groom and his family, marriage arrangements were spoiled.

The bride’s family had reached the Police Division 3 to get registered a complaint late last night but the police did not register a case. Today, the family held a dharna outside the police station and it was lifted within a few minutes after the police assured to register a case against the groom and his family.

Sundar Das, a roadside vendor, said his daughter’s marriage was fixed with a boy, residing in the Shivpuri locality. When the ‘baraat’ was about to reach their home last night, the groom’s family called and demanded Rs 2 lakh as dowry.

“When I expressed my inability to fulfil the dowry demand, the accused refused to get married. I had already spent a lot of money on marriage arrangements. Now, I want the police to register a case against the groom and his family,” the bride’s father said.

Police sources said talks were on between both parties as they were called at the police station this evening. — TNS
