Ludhiana, June 23

After Covid, now it’s the turn of H1N1 influenza, commonly known as swine flu, to spread its tentacles in the district.

With one death and three confirmed cases this season so far, Ludhiana has become the worst-hit district in the state, the government has confirmed.

The State Programme Officer for National Vector Borne Diseases Control Programme (NVBDCP), Dr Gagandeep Singh Grover, told The Tribune here today that five confirmed cases of swine flu had been reported in the state so far, of which a maximum of three cases were reported in Ludhiana district, and one each in Patiala and Bathinda. The only swine flu death reported in the state this season was from Ludhiana.

State gears up for H1N1

  • Isolation wards set up in districts
  • Oseltamivir 75-mg and 30-mg tablets made available
  • PPE kits, N95 masks stocked

The situation seems grim as the confirmed cases and one death this season so far were already up and above only three confirmed cases reported in the state in 2021 when no death due to swine flu was reported.

Punjab had witnessed the worst swine flu spread in 2020 when 68 confirmed cases and five deaths due to the H1N1 virus were reported in the state.

Dr Grover said the health facilities across the state had been ramped up to tackle the situation arising out of swine flu spread in the state. “Isolation wards have been established in all districts with the availability of sufficient quantities of Oseltamivir 75-mg and 30-mg tablets for the treatment of swine flu patients, PPE kits and masks to deal with the situation,” he added. Regarding the wine flu death reported in Ludhiana yesterday the state health official said the exact cause would be ascertained after conducting the death audit. The H1N1 influenza was notified under the Epidemic Diseases Act.
