Mandi Ahmedgarh, Jan 28
The Dehlon police claimed to have busted a gang that has been involved in drug peddling in the guise of transportation of goods for traders and arrested one of its members.
Two persons were booked under the NDPS Act on Saturday. They had succeeded in evading arrest during a raid on Dry Port Road at Lehra village late on Saturday evening. They were identified as Hoshiar Singh Soni of Jodhan village and Jammu Singh of Ghungrana village.
However, Jammu was arrested by a police team, led by ACP (South) Guriqbal Singh and Dehlon SHO Varinder Singh, this morning. The truck used in the crime and 100 kg of poppy husk were seized from the suspect.
Commissioner of Police, Ludhiana, Kuldeep Singh Chahal, said police officials had received a tip-off about illegal activities of a group of miscreants who had been distributing drugs in the region after smuggling the same under the guise of transportation of goods.
The police team conducted raids on the outskirts of Lehra village on the basis of the tip-off on Saturday but the duo succeeded in dodging the police. Jammu was later arrested with the huge quantity of contraband being carried in 50 bags.
Though the police are yet to identify other members of the gang, if any, and the origin of the seized narcotics, preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect had been involved in the illicit trade of drug peddling for over 10 years. At least three cases under the NDPS Act were registered against him at the Dehlon and Jodhan police stations in the past.
Hoshiar Singh was also booked in three drug cases at Malaudh, Sudhar and Jodhan.
