Hold candidates accountable

If a party and candidate fail to deliver on the promises during campaigning, he/she must be held accountable for the same and appropriate action must be taken against them.

Give tax relief to pandemic-hit industry

Just like every election season, politicians have made tall promises this Assembly election as well. There are real issues that plague Ludhiana and need immediate resolution such as pollution, unorganised traffic system, potholed roads, water disposal system and corruption-free system. Pandemic-hit industry should also be given tax relief.

Upgrade sewerage, water disposal system

The population of the city is multiplying at an exponential rate. Along with it, vehicular population is also increasing, which has led to frequent traffic snarls lasting hours. This has also put a strain on decades-old sewerage and waste disposal systems, which are in dire need to be upgraded. It is high time that the Buddha Nallah was also cleaned. With non-renewable resources of energy depleting, it is important that the government should start investing in solar projects.

Medical facilities at affordable prices

Before each election, all political parties allure voters by announcing various schemes and gifts such as free electricity, free education, grant for women, free laptops etc. Instead of making false claims, political parties must ensure the best medical facilities at affordable prices and affordable education. If parties fail to fulfil their promises, they should be held accountable and action should be taken against them.

More green belts to deal with pollution

To make Ludhiana a Smart city in true sense, the elected politicians will have to be realistic. Merely making castles in the air will accomplish nothing. The city is afflicted with the problems of dirty drinking water, polluted air to breathe and bad roads. The overpopulated city also lacks adequate green belts. Traffic congestions, slums mushrooming in every corner of the city, increase in the number of strays and unsanitary conditions are other issues that the residents face on a day-to-day basis.

Dr Sunil Chopra

More & better govt hospitals needed

During elections, parties make promises of all kinds to curry votes in their favour. The main issues that need urgent attention are more government hospitals, better government schools, maintenance of roads, relocation of the local industry to one designated location and installation of CCTV cameras for the safety of residents. The city also needs a permanent site for exhibition of local industrial products.

Complete pending infra projects

There are many issues in the city which need to be addressed at the earliest. Pending infrastructure projects must be completed as early as possible so that menace of traffic can be controlled. Air pollution, water pollution and noise pollution are creating havoc in the city. Industries of the city need sound policies for work. Interference of political parties in industries should be strictly banned.

Better employment opportunities

Ludhiana is a hub of commercial activities. This has led to rapid urbanisation and population growth over the last few decades. As a result of which, numerous problems have risen, which require immediate attention of the politicians. Providing better health care system, adequate and affordable education, and better employment opportunities to the residents should be the top priority areas of the politicians. Solution to the issues of environmental degradation, pollution, traffic chaos, parking, law and order should be another priority. Proper sewage and drainage system, better public transportation and solid waste management must be provided wherever needed.

Raghbir Sembhi

Do not accept freebies offered by politicians

In my view, we should not accept freebies announced by any political party. We must demand from them better health facilities, education system, good infrastructure, civic amenities and uninterrupted power supply. Each ward must have one clinic for looking after patients in case of emergency. We expect from political parties to focus on employment opportunities so that our youth do not immigrate.

Dr Mohd Saleem Farooqui

Build proper infrastructure

If one looks at the slew of promises made by all candidates during the hustling and assesses them on their past performances, then almost all politicians will be caught wanting and declared as defaulters. It is a known fact that populist schemes announced before elections are allowed to perish, once the purpose of fetching votes was over. Ludhiana needs leaders who can make our city more prosperous by concentrating more on building infrastructure. People also need electricity at an affordable rate, proper garbage disposal system, control on price rise and roads re-carpeted wherever necessary.

QUESTION

With polling for high-stakes Punjab Assembly polls concluded on Sunday, the fate of 175 candidates in Ludhiana has been sealed in EVMs. What are the expectations from the new dispensation?
