Commuters faced a huge inconvenience as shopkeepers and residents blocked the Jassian and Haibowal main road on Thursday. They blocked the road in protest against its dilapidated condition.
Long queues of vehicles were witnessed on the road. Later the police had to provide diversions to prevent traffic jam on the road.
Shopkeepers alleged that the stretch of Jassian road has been lying in a sorry state for a long time. Recently construction of Jassian road was started but the Municipal Corporation stopped it mid-way.
Due to the under-constructed road, dust flow inside their residences and shops making their lives a living hell, shopkeepers alleged. “Several people have also suffered injuries on the road as their two-wheelers skidded. One of the residents even suffered a serious injury as bone of his foot broke after his scooter skidded on the road,” they said.
“When elections come, politicians come to our houses with folded hands and make promises that their primary motive would be the all-round development of the area but when people vote them and make them win, politicians forget their promises. Now we will not vote for Congress leaders in the coming Assembly elections. We will also boycott the Congress councillor for failing to listen to our woes,” alleged a protester.
Many a times, they apprised councillors Loveleen Toor and Rocky Bhatia and area MLA Rakesh Pandey but nobody paid heed to their pleas.
The protest lasted for over an hour and it was lifted after an assurance from some Congress leaders that the road construction work would be completed soon.
Protesters alleged that if the road is not re-carpeted in the coming few days they would sit on a dharna on the road for an indefinite period.
