Now, workers can generate UAN from provident fund portal directly

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has now made it possible for members to get their Universal Account Number (UAN) directly without any intervention of the employer.

Giving details of the same, Regional PF Commissioner Sunil Kumar Yadav said, “The EPFO now allows every employee to go online and generate a UAN on his own. This facility can be used by new employees, who are joining the workforce, as well as by employees who have older EPF accounts but do not have a UAN as yet.”

He added, “Currently, the establishments with large number of new joiners are facing problems due to mismatch of data with Aadhaar. Therefore, an open functionality is being provided where employees can generate a UAN on their own.”

About the UAN and its need: The UAN is a 12-digit unique number allotted to each member of EPF which helps him/her to control all his/her EPF accounts. The UAN will be associated with an employee and will connect all his PF (Provident Fund) accounts across organisations. The number is issued by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. If an individual changes his job, he will get a new PF account with the organisation. This way, multiple PF account numbers will be allotted to an employee. Multiple PF account numbers is an area of concern as many employees report grievances related to transfer and withdrawal of PF amount. To counter this problem and to make the management of PF accounts easier, the concept of UAN was introduced. The UAN is a single account number that will connect the multiple IDs associated with an employer. With UAN, an employee can connect all his EPFO accounts to make the process of PF withdrawal and transfer easy.

To generate your UAN, you need your Aadhaar number and must have your mobile number registered in Aadhaar database. Without this, UAN cannot be generated.
