The Patiala Heritage Festival 2024, which is being organised by the district administration, organised a tour of the city’s heritage sites for the younger generation.
The 140th Heritage Walk was organised as part a project of the Patiala Foundation.
The heritage walk was inaugurated by Additional Deputy Commissioner (Rural Development) Dr Harjinder Singh, with hoisting of flags at the royal tombs. Present at the event were SDM Arvind Kumar, Taranjeet Kaur Bedi and Ravi Ahluwalia, Chief Functionary of the Patiala Foundation, along with other dignitaries.
Bedi stated the Patiala Heritage Festival has been organised to acquaint the younger generation with the city’s rich heritage, culture and legacy. He praised the efforts of the Patiala Foundation in helping students understand the significance of the city’s 262-year-old heritage, much of which remains unknown to the public.
Participants at the heritage walk included students from various colleges and Yadavindra Public School, and other residents of the city.
The walk commenced at the royal tombs and passed through Haveli Mohalla, Chatta Nanumal, Bartan Bazaar, Mishri Bazaar, Roop Chand Mohalla, Sapan Wali Gali, Rajeshwari Shiv Mandir, Kotwali, and Darshani Gate before concluding at Qila Mubarak. Walking through the city, Ravi Ahluwalia educated the tour members about the historical significance of various locations on the route.
The participants were briefed about the significance of the royal tombs, Chatta Nanumal (residence of the erstwhile royal state’s minister), Bartan Bazaar, which is around 262 years old, and Darshani Gate, once an entrance to the city. The walk came to an end as the group reached the residence of the founder of the Patiala dynasty, Baba Ala Singh.
