Ropar, July 15

Demanding regular teachers at the local government primary school, a large number residents staged a protest at the nearby Raipur village here today after the lone teacher posted at the school was transferred after his promotion on May 6. Since then, the authorities have been sending a teacher every day from other schools.

Social activist Daljit Singh Raipur, Jaswinder Kaur and Bhag Singh, who were among the protesters, said there used to be two teachers in the school. One of the teachers was transferred a few years ago, while the other one was transferred on May 6. Now, there was not even a single teacher for 35 students in the school.

DEO Jarnail Singh said efforts were made to shift a teacher from Aulakhan village, but he could not be transferred due to an objection from the village panchayat. Now, teachers were being sent on a rotation basis from schools in adjoining villages, he said.
