Will secure river water share, says Haryana Governor

Chandigarh, February 20

Haryana recommitted itself to bringing its “legitimate share” of water through the Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) canal when the Vidhan Sabha met on the opening day of the Budget session here today.

Against the backdrop of the recent all-party meeting by Punjab chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh which demanded reassessment of the state’s water availability and passed a resolution stating it did not have surplus water to give away, Haryana Governor Satyadeo Narain Arya, in his address to the House, said: “Every possible effort will be made to bring to Haryana our legitimate share of the surplus Ravi-Beas waters through the SYL canal at the earliest.”

This assumes significance when read in the light of Punjab’s resolution last month which stated that the state did not have surplus water.

In the address, the Governor explained the “water plan” of Haryana at length, stating that “high priority” would be given to ensuring equitable distribution of water and a campaign had been launched to feed all tail ends.

Liquor set to be cheaper, bars to open till 3 am

Chandigarh: Haryana has allowed bars in Gurugram, Faridabad and Panchkula districts to serve liquor till 3 am even as it has moved to lower beer and wine rates.
