Students of the music department of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) on Monday accused a woman assistant professor of making inappropriate comments in their class, dragging them into departmental politics, not taking their classes and also misbehaving with them. The assistant professor in question has already filed a complaint against her junior colleague regarding sexual harassment.

The students wrote to Vice-Chancellor Jaspal Singh Sandhu and Dean Academic Affairs Kamaljit Singh on January 18 to inform them about their ordeal. They accused her of sending someone else on her behalf for taking classes.

“The assistant professor has been passing personal remarks, even on socio–economic status. She is also making an effort to drag us into a complaint filed by her against another assistant professor,” said a student of Masters in Performing Art, semester IV.

The students, who have filed the complaint, have boycotted the classes. They said they would resort to protest if their issue is not resolved.

“The authorities have not taken any action over a complaint filed by us on January 18. We had a couple of meetings with the authorities concerned,” said another student.

Refuting the allegations, the assistant professor said, “They are a few students from Masters of Performing Art, semester IV. Rest of the students are attending my classes as per the timetable. I have neither involved them in my complaint against a colleague nor sent anyone to take classes on my behalf. They have been motivated to do so.”

GNDU Registrar Karanjeet Singh Kahlon said, “The complaint of students has been marked to the vigilance committee of the university. It is being looked into.”
