5,918 Sukanya Samriddhi accounts

AMRITSAR: The local division of the post office opened 5,918 accounts in the 2018-2019 financial year under Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana of the Central Government.

The local division of the post office opened 5,918 accounts in the 2018-2019 financial year under Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana of the Central Government.

The scheme ensures saving for the girl child in terms of education, marriage expenses. The saving account can be opened till a girl attains the age of 10. One can open the account with Rs 250 by depositing birth certificate of the girl, address and identity proofs of the parents or guardians.

The department has been organising camps and seminars to create awareness on the government scheme. There is no compulsion to deposit on a monthly basis for the account holders.

Officials say this is one of the most sought after account due to its high interest and low minimum balance.

Makhan Singh, senior superintendent, post office, Amritsar division, said, “One has to pay till the child attains the age of 14. There is no compulsion to maintain a minimum amount monthly. We have been creating awareness about the same through various programmes in schools and public places.”
