MOHALI: The local police have arrested a 25-year-old person for raping a 17-year-old girl, who came in his contact through Facebook here.

The local police have arrested a 25-year-old person for raping a 17-year-old girl, who came in his contact through Facebook here.

The suspect has been identified as Gurpreet Singh, who hailed from Jagraon. At present, he is working with a private company in the Industrial Area here.

According to Mohali DSP (City II) Ramandeep Singh, Gurpreet had called the victim, a resident of Jalandhar, at his rented accommodation in Phase 11 here on April 16 where she stayed with him. The victim, a Class 12 student, alleged that the suspect raped her at his accommodation.

The DSP said during preliminary investigations, it came to fore that the victim and the suspect came in contact with each other through a social networking site, Facebook, around four months ago.

The victim gave her complaint to Chandigarh Police. Later, the complaint was transferred to the Mohali police, which registered a case under Section 376 against the suspect at the Phase 11 police station.

The suspect was produced before a local court, which sent him to one-day police remand.
