The Punjab State Medical and Dental Teachers’ Association (PSMDTA) has welcomed the proposal of the Punjab government to explore the possibility of shifting the proposed medical college in Mohali to Sangrur district and plan all future health projects in areas that lack facilities.

In a press release, Dr DS Bhullar, general secretary, PSMDTA, said the medical fraternity had appreciated the approach of Chief Minister Capt Amrinder Singh and Medical Education Minister Brahm Mohindra to give due representation to Sangrur district, which was lagging behind in the field of medical education.

He said there was no medical college in the area and the state government must take up the matter with the Union government strongly.

Dr Bhullar said the new medical college should be named after Shaheed Udham Singh or founder of the Patiala regime Baba Ala Singh Ji.

“The new medical college should be opened on the Patiala-Sangrur national highway. Such a site will also attract the retired medical faculty from adjoining government medical college in Patiala,” he added.

The association said the move would also partially correct the “past wrongdoings” wherein crores of rupees had been spent in Government Medical College Patiala in the past few years just to satisfy the MCI conditions such as increasing 50 MBBS seats to 200. It said with the same amount, a new medical college with 150 MBBS seats could be opened in Sangrur district.
