Among 835 universities worldwide, NTU Rankings, released by National Taiwan University today, have listed Panjab University in the 651-700 bracket.

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Rankings accesses the performance ranking of scientific papers for world universities. It provides overall ranking, rankings by six fields and rankings by 24 selected subjects.

The website of NTU Rankings, however, does not show the score of Panjab University in several indicators.

Also, NTU Rankings lists a total of 11 universities from India, among which Panjab University bagged the 7th rank, while the Indian Institute of Science is on the first spot. To this, PU IQAC Director Dr Ashish Jain said, “NTU Rankings is based on the scientific output of the institutes and is a very authentic criteria. PU was ranked higher than most other Indian institutes and this means that its scientific output is much higher. Howsoever, globally, to bag a top spot, we have to perform better and increase our scientific output.”

This year, the performance ranking included clinical medicine, psychiatry/psychology, biology & biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology & genetics, neuroscience & behaviour, space science, economics & business and social sciences, general. Except clinical medicine and social sciences, general are issued to the top 500 universities, others are issued to the top 300 universities.

Indicators: The performance measures comprise eight indicators. These indicators represent three criteria of scientific paper performance: research productivity, research impact & research excellence.

Sample selection: The ranking system employs bibliometric methods to analyse and rank the scientific paper performances of the world’s top 800 universities. The selection of the 800 universities for inclusion in this ranking system was based on information obtained from the Essential Science Indicators (ESI). Of over 4,000 research institutions listed in the ESI, the ranking system first selected the top 900 institutions based on the numbers of published journal articles, citations. Non-university institutions were then removed from the list and the project staff compared the remaining universities to those included in other ranking programs.
