Panchkula, June 24

A 29-year-old youth was shot at on his chest near the left shoulder near the North Park hotel in Panchkula late last night after he tried to rescue a girl who was being thrashed by her male companion.

The youth, Fateh Singh, a resident of Patiala, was rushed to the Civil Hospital, Sector 6, from where doctors referred him to the PGI, where his condition is stated to be serious.

Jagwinder Singh, a resident of Majri Chowk, Panchkula, in his complaint to the police, said he and his friends Fateh, Sandy of Mani Majra, Sukh, a resident of Amritsar, and Deep were standing alogside their vehicles — an Alto car and a Scorpio jeep — on the road in front of the North Park hotel around midnight. Two girls and a boy were in the parking area of the hotel. The boy was thrashing one of the girls. Fateh, who was watching this, rushed to the area and asked the boy why he was thrashing the girl. The boy started quarrelling with Fateh. The girl, who was being thrashed, said there was no rift between her and the boy. A PCR van also arrived and the police intervened to end the scuffle between the boy and Fateh.

In the meantime, the boy called out to his father after which a man came out of the hotel and held Fateh by the neck. Jagwinder said he, along with Deep and Sandy, rushed to the rescue of Fateh and they all came back to the main road. The boy, with whom Fateh had a scuffle, along with three boys and a man, started assaulting them and one of the boys shot at Fateh on the chest. The boy again shot at Fateh, but as the victim fell down, the bullet crossed him, missing his head.

He said after hearing the gunshots, people, who were attending a party at the hotel, gathered at the spot and one of the boys escaped from the spot in a Skoda Laura car (CH 01AA 9836). The other boys escaped in two other cars. The PCR van took injured Fateh to the Civil Hospital, Sector 6, from where doctors referred him to the PGI.

The Chandimandir police have registered a case against unidentified persons under Sections 307, 323 and 34 of the IPC and Section 25 of the Arms Act.
